Does Medicare cover the cost of the session?
Medicare can cover some of the cost of the session. A person can get 10 sessions subsidised per calendar year. The rebate is for $124.50 per session. Please see a GP to get a referral to take advantage of this service.
Do both parents need to come?
Not necessarily. It is great to see both parents at some stage in the process. We understand that there are often work commitments that make it difficult. However, meeting all the parents and carers is always appreciated.
How do I explain it to my child?
Some parents find it too difficult to explain to their kids that they are seeing a psychologist. However, if a child is well prepared for the session it can speed the process up a little. It is useful for a child to have some understanding of the main problem is that has inspired these sessions. Often they know. It is okay to keep it general. It is also worthwhile keeping in mind that it is the psychologists job to develop rapport with the child and we have dealt with all types of readiness for psychological treatment (this is me saying do not worry too much).
Will I be told I am a terrible parent?
It is extremely unlikely. Many parents, dare I say especially mothers, feel guilty about how they parent. We are here to help not to judge. Our approach will be collaborative and warm. It will be honest but come from a place that understands the challenges and relentless nature of being a parent.
